The band was initially called Unique Five but later changed their name to Unifics. The band gathered a huge following especially in DC, due to their unique attire, smooth harmonics, and their trademark.
AI Johnson was the band’s leader, singer and songwriter. It released various songs which became hits in the late 60s. As a result, it was signed under the Kapp Records label. The band’s first single Court of Love debuted at #25 and later reached number #3 at the US Billboard R&B Chart.
Tom Fauntleroy and Marvin Brown left the group later and were replaced during the original album release. The group disbanded in 1972 due to unknown reasons.
In 2005, Tom and Johnson decided to revive the band, after nearly three decades. The duo recruited singers Charlie Lockhart and Garrett Hall to form a band of four members. By the end of 2005, the group released Unifics Return.
